James Masterton (1777-aft 1818)

Mason

James Masterton was born in Annan, Dumfriesshire, trained as a mason, and had an interesting episode in 1818 when he was robbed while "under the influence"!

Genealogy

James Masterton was the eldest son of William Masterton, master mason, and Margaret Irving which places him as part of the Masterton group in Dumfriesshire. A fuller genealogy of James Masterton can be found at this link.

York Herald

Sunday week, as James Masterton, mason, of Lockerbie, was walking along Carlisle Bridge, on his way home, rather intoxicated, he was taken up by two men, and thrown over the bridge upon the new bank, a height of 18 or 20 feet, by which he was most severely injured: he fell only two or three feet from the river.

After he had laid there in great agony sometime, the fellows who threw him over, came to him with a dark lantern, and robbed him of all his money.
