David Masterton (1825-1864)

David Masterton (1825-1864)

Licensed Grocer, Dundee

David Masterton, manager of the Carron Society store at Carron, then grocer and spirit dealer in Dundee, was born in Falkirk to Alexander Masterton and Jean Rankin and although only five years or so in Dundee he appears to have made a favourable impression before he died at the age of only 38. His widow, Agnes Taylor Masterton (ms MacDonald) took over the business and when the original shop had to be closed to allow "Town Improvements", she successfully applied for a grocer's license for new premises at 99 Murraygate, Dundee.

Genealogy

David Masterton was the sixth of eight children born to Alexander Masterton, ironfounder, and Jean Rankin, who had married in 1815 in Larbert, Stirling. David Masterton belongs to the large group of Mastertons that originated in the Culross area. Fuller details of his extended family can be found at this link.

ONE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT AT LEAST.

Mrs Masterton, Seagate, sought a grocer's license for premises 99 Murraygate.
Provost ROBERTSON said this case had occupied the consideration of the Magistrates for the last six months. Applicant had been displaced in consequence of the improvements, and there appeared to have been a general understanding on the part of the Commissioners in Dundee when acquiring her property that they had paid a sum as against a business claim. Mrs Masterton at one period had intended to give up business, and at that period there was no doubt that negotiations were conducted on the understanding that she was to retire from business. Subsequently Mrs Masterton came into business, and with the intention of continuing in it. The Commissioners might have been misled, and as Mrs Masterton and her agent had stated explicitly to him that she never intended to retire from business, he and his brother Magistrates in Dundee were quite willing to withdraw their objections and allow the appeal to be sustained.
The appeal was accordingly sustained.
