James Masterton, lost his life tragically at the age of only 14 when bathing in the River Tay.

NEWBURGH.- Fatal Occurrence – A distressing event took place on Tuesday forenoon, the 10th current. A number of boys had gone into the river to bathe at the beach to the west of the harbour; one of them, a boy 14 years of age, son of James Masterton, warper, had ventured too far into the river, and, being unable to swim, was drowned. Search was made for the body, but it was not recovered until seven o’clock in the evening, when it was found in one of the nets belonging to the fishers.
